French Onion Yogurt Dip and an Experiment

Our sponsor, Yoplait® asked me to create a recipe with yogurt. I’m excited to share my French onion yogurt dip recipe with you today. The dip makes for a lovely snack or as a side for your meal. In addition to the recipe, we did a little experimenting with the yogurt. Did you know you can turn regular yogurt into Greek yogurt? We tested this out.

French Onion Yogurt Dip

The Yogurt Experiment

For our dip recipe, I wanted to use Greek yogurt. It think it just works better in savory dips. It’s thicker and tangier than regular yogurt. I couldn’t find plain Yoplait® Greek at my store. My husband suggested using regular plain yogurt and making our own Greek style yogurt. It sounded like a fun experiment to me.

All you do is strain the whey from the regular yogurt.

I set up a bowl with a strainer and some cheese cloth. Then, I added the container of plain Yoplait® yogurt. I covered the setup and placed it in the refrigerator until the next morning.

The result was a thicker yogurt that was a bit tangier. It wasn’t exactly like Greek yogurt but it’s texture was perfect for the base of our dip.

French Onion Yogurt Dip

My son’s favorite dip is French onion yogurt dip. In fact, it’s the only dip he actually likes – not ranch, not tzatziki, not even regular French onion. The dip is very simple to make. The only complication is carmelizing the onions. It can take a while, but it’s so worth it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt (or make your own like we did)
  • 2 cups diced sweet onion (one large sweet onion should do the trick)
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme (about 4 sprigs)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • dash of pepper
  • lemon/lime juice to taste (I used 1/4 of a lime)

Directions:

  1. Saute the onions over medium/medium-low heat until caramelized (about 20-40 minutes). Be careful not to burn the onions. Turn down your heat if you are worried.

  2. Allow the onions to cool.
  3. Mix together the yogurt, cooled onions, and spices. I added a squeeze of lime juice to increase the tanginess of the dip. Taste the dip first and then add small amounts of lemon or lime juice until you reach the flavor you like.
  4. Serve with veggies and/or chips.
