Flower Print Art

I feel like we’ve had an extra long winter this year. Spring is finally here – flowers are all around us and the weather is warm. What better time to head outside and explore? We brought some flowers inside and created some flower print art.

Materials:

  • flowers
  • white paper
  • hammer/mallet {we used my son’s toy hammer}
  • paint {optional}

Find the Flowers

Go for a nature walk in your backyard, around the neighborhood, or to a nearby park. Gather up some flowers {that you know are okay to take}. Aiden loves dandelions – when they are yellow and when they’re white. He picked all of the yellow dandelions in our yard and a few white ones. He also found a few tiny yellow flowers {I’m not sure what they were.}

Create the Print

Lay the flowers on a piece of paper. Place a second piece of paper on top of the flowers.

Hit the paper and flowers with the toy hammer/mallet. My son quite enjoyed this part.

We then checked the flower prints. Aiden wasn’t happy with the result, so we placed the flowers on the paper again this time with the yellow part of the dandelions facing down. He tried again. He was pleased after the second attempt.

Aiden wanted to paint the flower prints. I showed him how to add green lines to the prints. He did pretty well. I figured there would be paint lines everywhere.

He asked if he could paint the second paper however he wanted. This one received lots of green paint. He wanted to add leaves and flowers to it.

The types of flowers you choose and how hard you hit the flowers will determine the flower prints that show up. You may like your prints without paint. My son chose to add some paint and real flowers. Let your children create their art how they wish. It’s all about the process, exploring materials, and having fun together.
