We are excited for the new Finding Dory movie. I set up this Finding Dory inspired sensory writing tray. It’s a fun way to practice letter writing, spelling words, or even just pre-writing skills.

Practice Writing Lowercase Letters

I love how this activity is adaptable to different ages. Initially, I set this up for my son to practice writing lowercase letters. He knows how to write all of his letters but he chooses uppercase for some letters and lowercase for others.

I wanted a fun activity that would focus on just lowercase letters. I found a free lowercase letter printable from Twinkl. I cut apart the letters and placed them in a stack.

Aiden chose a letter and then practiced writing it in the blue sand. He used a paint brush as his writing tool most of the time. He also used his finger or Dory.

To set up the sensory writing tray, I added a thin layer of blue sand to an old white pan. I placed the pan on top of some freezer paper to help with clean up.

Practice Pre-Writing Skills

Lily (age 2) found the sensory tray very inviting as well. I encouraged her to draw lines in the blue sand. Sometimes she used a paintbrush.

Sometimes she used Dory. This is great for working on a pencil grip.
