I’ve mentioned Lily’s love of dragons before and how it all started with a bedtime story. We’ve been reading dragon books ever since. Dragons Love Tacos is the perfect theme for her third birthday party. Dragons love tacos and so does Lily. Baby brother Elon’s birthday is just two weeks before Lily’s. Due to everyone’s schedules, we decided to combine their parties this year.

Dragons Love Tacos but be careful when you invite them to your taco party. They can only handle very mild salsa. If they get even a little spicy salsa, trouble occurs. And of course, as you can imagine, the dragons cause some trouble in the story. Don’t worry though, they help to fix everything. After all, they’ll work for tacos.

Every good party needs a cake. For our Dragons Love Taco Party, I made a simple 2-layered round chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. Then, I decorated it with a dragon eating tacos. The dragon and tacos are made out of modeling chocolate. I used Wilton’s recipe for making modeling chocolate (candy clay) from candy melts. Combine 1 12 oz bag of candy melts with 1/4 cup of light corn syrup. Then, I followed this YouTube video to make the modeling chocolate (aside from the amounts).

I used two packages of red candy melts and one package of white. I didn’t use the entire pile of red modeling chocolate. You could probably get away with just one bag of red if you make your dragon smaller. I colored the white modeling chocolate with candy food coloring and regular food coloring. Adding a lot of food coloring makes the modeling chocolate a bit soft. You can add cornstarch to combat this problem. Read this post for tips on coloring modeling chocolate. She recommends gel food coloring.

I set the cake up on my buffet table with the book and dragon toy that Penguin Kids sent us for the party. I found the chalkboard sign in the Target dollar spot. The table runner is a piece of dragon fabric leftover from making Lily’s dragon skirt.

The taco party food included flour and corn tortillas, shredded chicken for the tacos (my husband’s recipe), guacamole (the best ever), red salsa, green salsa, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese, chihuahua cheese, shredded lettuce, cilantro, limes, tortillas chips, and a veggie tray.

Dragon Costumes for Kids

Lily was a dinosaur for last Halloween. She’s been wearing the dinosaur around the house calling it a dragon for a couple months now. I thought it would be a good idea to make her a proper dragon costume for the party.

I found the dragon wings and mask on Amazon. I sewed the skirt myself and paired it with a black t-shirt and gold jellies. I actually found the skirt fabric at Walmart. It was a bit stretchy and difficult to work with (I couldn’t iron the hem flat), but I eventually made it work.

Here’s what the wings look like from the back. We did a color changing dragon egg hunt as one of the birthday party games.

A dragon egg hunt is a great activity for a dragon birthday party.

Since Elon was turning one, I made his birthday party outfit much simpler. I found a t-shirt and shorts from Target. (I love their Cat and Jack line.) Then, I used my Silhouette Cameo to create a freezer paper stencil. The dragon picture came from the Silhouette library. You can learn how to make a freezer paper stencil for a birthday shirt here. (I’ve also made an R2-D2 baby costume and a monster shirt with freezer paper stencils.)

Then, we sang to Elon. Daddy, big brother, and Lily helped blow out his candle.
