Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss {Virtual Book Club for Kids}

Dr. Seuss is our featured author this month for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. It was impossible to choose just one book to share with you, so this week is Dr. Seuss week here at Inspiration Laboratories. I’ll be sharing Dr. Seuss inspired ideas all week long. First up is Green Eggs and Ham.

Green Eggs and Ham pretend play, an omelette recipe, and more Dr. Seuss ideas

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss

Since reading Green Eggs and Ham, my 3 year old has been quoting it: “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them Sam-I-Am.” I always love it when he gets into the book. Green Eggs and Ham is a full of wonderful rhymes and repetition which makes it easy for children to pick up.

Let’s Pretend with Play Dough

I made a batch of play dough using The Imagination Tree’s recipe. My favorite is the cooked play dough, but the 4 minute no-cook play dough is also really good.

Aiden got to work making green eggs and ham.

He tried to serve them to me. I told him I did not like green eggs and ham. He persuaded me to try them. I eventually gave in.

Our Green Eggs and Ham Recipe

Aiden also requested to eat green eggs and ham for lunch. Then, he said, “Not eggs; just ham.” We didn’t have any ham at the time, so I asked him if he wanted pretend ham. He had turkey that was pretend green ham. I love the imagination.

Of course I had to make him real green eggs and ham. I am not partial to adding food coloring to our food {yes, I know we play with it all the time}, so I tinted the eggs more naturally with peas and added in the ham. Here’s the recipe in case you would like to make it, too.

Green Eggs and Ham Omelette

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup frozen peas
  • splash of milk {optional}
  • splash of water
  • 4 eggs
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • butter/margarine
  • shredded cheese
  • ham

Directions:

  1. To a blender, add 3/4 cup peas. {I added my frozen peas straight to the blender. I had to add some warm water to thaw out the peas and get a smooth consistency. Next time, I will thaw the peas before I blend them.}
  2. Add a splash of milk and/or water to help blend the peas.
  3. Blend peas to a smooth consistency.
  4. Add 4 eggs to the blender. Salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Pulse on low to whisk together the eggs.
  6. Melt a tablespoon or so of butter or margarine in a non-stick skillet on medium heat.
  7. Pour half of the egg mixture into the skillet.

  8. When the eggs set, add your cheese and ham. {Because I added so much liquid to my peas, it took longer for my eggs to set than a normal omelette. Pay attention to this or you will end up with an egg scramble instead of an omelette.}
  9. Fold your omelette. Finish cooking. Serve.
