Christmas Listening Game

We continue our countdown to Christmas for day 16 of Advent. I’m sharing a Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day until Christmas. Day 16’s activity is a Christmas Listening Game called What’s That Sound?

Christmas Listening Game – What’s That Sound?

In our A to Z Science series for toddlers and preschoolers, L is for Listening Skills. I shared 3 listening games to practice listening skills. Aiden’s favorite game of the 3 was the What’s That Sound? game. It’s a listening game that gets kids moving, too. I created a Christmas version of the listening game.

You’ll need some Christmas objects that can make a noise. Here’s what we used:

  • a gift bag
  • wrapping paper
  • aluminum foil {because there’s a lot of baking around Christmas and you can wrap presents/treats with it}
  • tissue paper
  • jingle bells
  • a homemade drum {because of the Little Drummer Boy song}
  • a roll of ribbon
  • a Christmas tin

How to Play:

  1. Have your child stand on one side of the room. Place the noise making Christmas items with you on the other side of the room.
  2. Ask your child to turn around facing away from you {and no peeking!}.
  3. Make a noise with one of the objects.
  4. Ask your child to run across the room and choose the object that made the noise.
  5. Reset and play again.

To make the game easier, listen to all of the sounds before you start the game. Ask your child to describe the sounds. Does it sound like a drum? Is it metallic sounding? What makes the sounds different?

I made our drum from a plastic peanut jar, a balloon, and a rubber band. Cut off the end of the balloon. Stretch the balloon tightly over the opening of the jar. Place a rubber band around the top of the jar to help keep the balloon on. The tightness of your balloon will impact the sound of your drum. {There’s a whole other lesson on listening, huh?} Use your whole hand, a few fingers, or just a thumb to play the drum. Or find something to use as drumsticks. We used chopsticks.

What other Christmas objects could you use to make a sound?

I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 17’s Christmas science activity.
