Button Hop – A Movement Game for Toddlers

This month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Corduroy by Don Freeman. I was inspired by Corduroy’s buttons to create a button hop for Lily. It’s a fun movement game for toddlers. Affiliate links are included in this post. Clicking on the book titles or covers will take you to Amazon.

Corduroy is a sweet story about a stuffed bear who is up for sale in a department store. No one seems to want him and the poor bear has even lost one of his buttons. When a little girl named Lisa sees him, she wants to take him home. It’s the start of a beautiful friendship.

Button Hop – A Movement Game for Toddlers

I love how easy this game is and that it’s a super fun way to get kids moving. I created the game for Lily (age 2), but Aiden (age 6) had fun playing along with her.

What You’ll Need:

  • Colored paper
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Bowl or circle shape

I used construction paper although I wish I had cardstock or had laminated the paper to make it stronger. The buttons started getting worn out after several times of play. Find a bowl or something similar that is almost as large as your paper. Trace the bowl to draw a circle on the paper. Repeat this for all of your colors. Cut out your circles. Draw button holes in the middle.

Create large buttons for a button hop.

Place the buttons on the floor. Encourage your child to move from one button to the next. Can you jump?

It’s really fun for them to just run or jump from one button to the next. My kids enjoyed doing this for quite a while.

You can also ask questions as your child is moving from one button to the next. What color is that button?

Can you find the yellow button?

Instead of hopping from one button to the next, how else can you move? Can you crawl? Can you move like different animals?

What about counting the buttons? Can you hop onto 3 buttons? 1-2-3!
