Airplane Birthday Party Decorations

For Aiden’s airplane birthday party, the decorations were really simple. I made a banner, some flying planes, and some candy planes. I also threw in a few store bought toy planes. The toy planes didn’t stay on the table very long. Aiden claimed those for himself.

Clothespin Airplanes

While searching the Internet for birthday party ideas, I happened across these lovely clothespin airplanes at Create.Craft.Love. I thought they would be perfect for hanging from the ceiling fan.

Here’s what you need to make one:

  • 1 clothespin
  • 2 regular craft sticks
  • 2 mini craft sticks
  • 1 bead
  • hot glue
  • paint

My regular craft sticks were already painted, so I only needed to paint my clothespins and mini craft sticks. {I chose plastic pony beads. If you choose wooden beads, you’ll need to paint those as well.} I wanted a fun mixture of colors, so I painted the clothespins yellow. I painted some of the mini craft sticks blue and some green. I chose red, green, and blue regular craft sticks and red pony beads.

After assembling, you get something like this.

Hanging them from the ceiling fan was really easy. I placed some white ribbon over one of the fan blades and clipped a plane onto either side of the ribbon. You can adjust the positions of the planes to make them fly at different heights. The planes were the first thing Aiden saw when he came downstairs. He said, “They are flying!” So fun!

Candy Airplanes

On another Internet search, I found these cute candy airplanes from Birthday in a Box.

To make my version, you’ll need the following:

  • Smarties
  • Gummy lifesavers
  • Sticks of gum
  • Thin rubberbands
  • White cardstock cut to the size of a stick of gum
  • Stickers {I used star stickers}

Assemble the plane:

  1. Thread a rubberband through 2 gummy lifesavers.
  2. Place two sticks of gum and a piece of white cardstock on top of the gummy lifesavers.
  3. Pull each side of the rubberband up and over the “wings.”
  4. Place a roll of smarties in between the “wings” and the wheels.
  5. Add stickers to the wings, or decorate as you wish.

The white cardstock I used was actually leftover from some packaging. It was about the thickness of cardstock. I added white cardstock to the wings for two reasons. When I just used the sticks of gum, my wings were floppy and looked weird. Also, my gum wrappers had words printed all over them. The cardstock added stability to the wings and provided a white canvas to decorate.

To make Aiden’s banner, I used the following:

  • Ribbon
  • Cardstock {9 pieces of 12×12}
  • Hot glue
  • Silhouette Cameo {you could also use scissors}

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out the letters from different colors of cardstock. To make it easy, I printed 2 letters on the same piece of cardstock. I made the letters H and A as large as possible. Then, I replaced the letters H and A with P and P in the program so the letters were the exact same size. For the letters I and R, there was enough space to place another letter I, which I needed for AIDEN.

After the letter were all cut out, I hot glued them to the ribbon. We nailed the ribbon to the walls. And there you have a super easy banner.
