50 Books about Going Back to School

Are you getting ready for school? Are you looking for books to help your child or students with the transition? I have a few lists to help you out. Each list features books about going back to school. You’ll find books for starting school, starting kindergarten, and general books about school. (There is very little overlap between these lists.) Let me know if you have a favorite book to add to the list.

Maisy Goes to Preschool – Aiden just loves all of the Maisy series. In this book, you’ll follow Maisy the mouse as she experiences a day at preschool.

Llama Llama Misses Mama – The Llama Llama books are popular for a reason. Not only are they fun to read but they have great messages. Llama Llama is sad because it’s first day away from his mama, but soon he realizes all of the fun he can have at preschool.

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes – Who doesn’t love Pete the Cat? Follow him through the school and guess where he’s going next. Don’t forget to download the free song from the publisher. The melody is fun to sing, and the kids will enjoy it.

School Bus – If your child is anything like mine, she’ll love this book because it is about a school bus. Aiden points out every school bus we see and talks about how he can’t wait to ride one when he goes to school.

If You Take a Mouse to School – Another great series of books that we are quite fond of. {Check out more activities inspired by books by Laura Numeroff here.} “If you take a mouse to school, he’ll ask you for a lunch box. When you give him your lunch box, he’ll want a sandwich to go in it…” and so begins the circular story.
